Understanding Ditto:

The Ditto Application

Download Contact Us
Ditto is part cloud-based and part downloaded application

Both of these pieces together create a powerful and easy-to-use screen-sharing solution. There are two ways to connect with Ditto:
  1. Via the connect.goditto.com website and a temporary download
  2. Via an installed application on the user’s computer

The Temporary Application – Part 1

Why use the temporary version of Ditto?

This version of Ditto is recommended for organizations that allow users to download and run applications on their computers. This Ditto application can run from anywhere on the system, including a temporary folder or downloads folder. Ditto does not require a system-level installation.

This is best used when presenters are guests or when employees only need to occasionally share their computer screens.

Why is an application downloaded?

Not all operating systems and hardware combinations have components required to share a device screen from a browser or the operating system. The Ditto executable provides these capabilities regardless of the user’s operating system or browsing environment.

The Ditto Application

A user who wishes to share their entire Windows desktop to an Apple TV has no native way to share their screen. This capability is not built into Windows, and no extensions or plugins allow this. Ditto bridges the gap.

The Temporary Application – Part 2

Why does an application need to download every time a user wants to connect?

The Ditto servers contain the most up-to-date screen-sharing information about receivers. This includes mDNS information and the receiver’s IP address.

Network environments can change at any time. To ensure the user can connect reliably to the receiver, we require them to download the latest version of the application any time they want to share.

In addition to ever-changing network conditions, each Ditto application is specific to the room a user is in. One Ditto application can only mirror to the specified receiver.

How large is the Ditto application?

The Ditto application is lightweight and should only take a second to download. Application file size varies by operating system and included information, but file size is generally no larger than 5MB.

Bandwidth concerns can be addressed by self hosting the executable on a local intranet.

The Installable Application – Part 1

Why use the installed version of Ditto?

The installable version of the Ditto executable makes it possible for IT administrators to deploy Ditto across large networks. This is ideal if administrators restrict applications and download access on organization-owned systems.

The installable version of Ditto is permanently placed on a user’s system and allows them to enter a room code directly in the application.

Why is an application installed?

Not all operating systems and hardware combinations have components required to share a device screen from a browser or the operating system. The Ditto executable provides these capabilities regardless of the user’s operating system or browsing environment.

The Installable Application – Part 1

A user who wishes to share their entire Windows desktop to an Apple TV has no native way to share their screen. This capability is not built into Windows, and no extensions or plugins allow this. Ditto bridges the gap.

The Installable Application – Part 2

How is the application deployed?

The installable version of Ditto can be deployed with GPO or Apple Remote desktop.

How is the application updated?

You can manually push updates with GPO or Apple Remote Desktop. Additionally, the application will automatically update itself on a user’s system when an update is available.
